Restorative Dentistry in Smithtown, NY

logo icon

Mathew Dental Group offers restorative dentistry in Smithtown, NY, for patients with damaged, painful, worn, or missing teeth. A weakened or missing tooth can make chewing difficult, affect your bite, cause nearby teeth to shift, and lead to jawbone loss over time.

Dr. Bilu Mathew and Dr. Julie Mathew help restore comfort, function, and stability through precise treatment options, including fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, dentures, root canal treatment, and full-mouth reconstruction.

Preserving your natural tooth is always the priority. When that is not possible, our team explains your replacement options clearly so you understand your choices before treatment begins.

What Is Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative dentistry diagnoses and treats damaged, decayed, weakened, or missing teeth. It includes treatments that repair tooth structure, protect weak teeth, or replace missing teeth. Restorative treatments may include composite fillings, crowns, bridges, dental implants, dentures, root canal treatment, extractions, and full mouth reconstruction.

At Mathew Dental Group, each treatment plan begins with a complete exam and digital X-rays.  Dr. Mathew reviews your results, explains what is causing the problem, and discusses your options before any treatment begins.

Who Needs Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative dentistry is for patients with dental damage, decay, missing teeth, or bite problems. You may benefit from restorative care if you have:

  • A cracked, chipped, or fractured tooth
  • A cavity too large for a simple filling
  • A tooth worn down by grinding or clenching that affects your bite or causes sensitivity
  • Pain or sensitivity when chewing
  • A tooth that needs protection after root canal therapy
  • One or more missing teeth
  • A loose, failing, or damaged crown or filling
  • Visible decay spreading to nearby teeth
  • Bone loss linked to missing teeth
Early treatment often leads to simpler care and lower costs. A small cavity may only need a filling. Left untreated, it may later require a crown, root canal, or extraction.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first visit to Mathew Dental Group gives you a clear diagnosis, treatment options, and cost details before any restorative treatment begins.
Step 1: Complete Oral Exam
Dr. Mathew begins with a full oral exam to check your teeth, gums, bite, and overall oral health. This helps identify the main problem and any related concerns.
Digital X-rays are taken to evaluate tooth structure, bone levels, roots, and areas not visible during a regular exam. This helps identify the main concern and any hidden issues that may affect your treatment plan.
After the exam, Dr. Mathew reviews the findings with you. He explains what is causing the problem, how serious it is, and what may happen if it is left untreated.
Dr. Mathew explains the treatment options that fit your needs. This may include a filling, crown, bridge, implant, denture, root canal, extraction, or phased restorative treatment.
Before treatment is scheduled, you receive a clear cost estimate with your insurance benefits applied. This helps you understand your expected out-of-pocket cost in advance.
Your questions are answered before you leave. If treatment needs to be completed over multiple visits, the team creates a plan that fits your needs, schedule, and budget.

Our Restorative Dentistry Services

Mathew Dental Group offers restorative treatments that repair damaged teeth, replace missing teeth, and rebuild comfortable bite function through a plan based on your oral health needs.

Composite Fillings

Composite fillings repair teeth damaged by decay. The tooth-colored resin bonds directly to the tooth and helps prevent bacteria from re-entering the treated area.

At Mathew Dental Group, composite fillings are matched to the shade of your natural teeth and require less removal of healthy tooth structure than older silver amalgam fillings.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a custom cap that covers and protects a damaged tooth. Crowns are used for cracked teeth, fractured teeth, root-canal-treated teeth, and teeth with significant decay or structural loss.

Dental crowns at Mathew Dental Group are fabricated from high-quality porcelain and zirconia, selected for strength, durability, and a natural appearance.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge replaces a missing tooth by anchoring an artificial tooth to the natural teeth on each side of the gap, restoring chewing function and preventing nearby teeth from shifting.

Since bridges are fixed restorations, they stay in place and function like natural teeth during daily use.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a long-term solution for missing teeth, using a titanium post placed into the jawbone to support a custom crown that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.

Implants also help preserve jawbone health by providing stimulation to the bone after tooth loss.

Dr. Bilu Mathew completed a two-year fellowship in dental implant placement and advanced prosthetics. His training included sinus grafting, bone augmentation, ridge preservation, and socket preservation. Implant placement and final restoration are both completed at the Smithtown office, without referrals to outside specialists.

Dentures and Partial Dentures

Dentures restore appearance, speech, and chewing ability for patients who are missing several or all teeth.

Mathew Dental Group offers full, partial, and implant-supported dentures and partial dentures, each custom-made from precise impressions to improve fit, comfort, and stability.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment saves a tooth when infection reaches the inner pulp by removing the infected tissue, cleaning the canal, and sealing the tooth to reduce the risk of reinfection.

Dr. Bilu Mathew performs root canal treatment with a focus on precision and comfort. In many cases, a crown is placed after treatment to protect the tooth from fracture.

Tooth Extractions

When a tooth is too damaged or infected to save, extraction removes it safely and prepares the area for future restoration.

Mathew Dental Group performs simple and surgical tooth extractions, including wisdom tooth removal, and discusses replacement options after extraction to help prevent bone loss and bite changes.

Full Mouth Reconstruction

Full mouth reconstruction helps patients with multiple missing teeth, severe wear, extensive decay, or widespread dental damage.

Dr. Bilu Mathew creates a phased plan that may include crowns, implants, bridges, fillings, dentures, or other restorative treatments. Each reconstruction plan is designed around your clinical needs, treatment timeline, and budget, so the process feels manageable from start to finish.

FAQ

Is restorative dentistry covered by dental insurance?

Most dental insurance plans cover restorative treatments such as fillings, crowns, and root canals, but coverage depends on your plan. Mathew Dental Group verifies your benefits before treatment and provides a clear estimate of your expected out-of-pocket cost.

Treatment time depends on the procedure and the extent of the damage. A filling may take one visit, while crowns, bridges, implants, or full mouth reconstruction may require multiple appointments. Dr. Mathew explains your timeline during your consultation.
Most restorative treatments are performed with local anesthesia to keep the area numb during the procedure. You may feel mild soreness or sensitivity afterward, but this often improves within a few days. The team focuses on comfort throughout care.
Delaying restorative treatment may allow damage to worsen. A small cavity may later require a crown, root canal, or extraction. Missing teeth may also lead to bone loss, shifting teeth, bite problems, and higher treatment costs.
Restoration lifespan depends on the material, tooth location, bite pressure, and home care habits. Composite fillings often last 5 to 10 years, while crowns and bridges may last 10 to 15 years or longer with proper care.
