What Exactly is a Single Dental Implant?

Think of a dental implant as a new, artificial tooth root. Unlike a dental bridge or partial denture that sits on top of the gums, an implant becomes a permanent part of your jaw.

A single tooth implant consists of three parts:
This three-part system provides unmatched stability, function, and aesthetics, making it feel and perform like the tooth nature gave you.

Benefits of Choosing a Single Tooth Implant

Why do our dentists and patients alike prefer implants? The benefits are truly life-changing:
Preserves Your Jawbone

When a tooth root is missing, the jawbone in that area begins to deteriorate, a process called resorption. An implant mimics the root, stimulating the bone and keeping it healthy and intact. This is crucial for maintaining your facial structure.

A traditional dental bridge requires grinding down the healthy teeth on either side of the gap to serve as anchors. An implant stands independently, leaving your perfectly healthy teeth completely untouched.

Because it’s anchored in your jaw, an implant feels, bites, and chews like a natural tooth. No slipping, no difficulty eating crunchy apples or corn on the cob!

With proper care and excellent oral hygiene, your dental implant and crown can last for decades, often a lifetime. It’s a long-term investment in your health.

A complete, beautiful smile allows you to engage with the world without a second thought. It’s your smile, only stronger.

The Single Dental Implant Journey at Mathew Dental Group

We know the word “surgery” can sound intimidating, but we promise to make your experience as gentle and stress-free as possible. Here’s what you can expect:
Consultation & Treatment Planning
We get to know you and your goals, and we use our advanced imaging technology to plan your procedure precisely.

Under local anesthesia (and sedation if you choose), Dr. Mathew will gently place the titanium implant post into your jawbone. The procedure is typically quicker than most patients expect!

This is the magical part. Over the next 3-6 months, your jawbone will naturally grow around and fuse with the implant post, a process called osseointegration. This creates a firm foundation. You’ll wear a temporary tooth during this time.
We’ll attach the abutment to the implant once healed. After your gums heal around it, we’ll take impressions to craft your permanent, beautiful crown. Finally, we’ll secure it, and you’ll walk out with a brilliant smile.

FAQ

How painful is the dental implant process?

Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how minimal the discomfort is. The procedure itself is performed with local anesthesia so that you won’t feel any pain. Post-surgery, discomfort is typically very manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers and resolves within a few days. We will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.

The entire process, from implant placement to attaching the final crown, usually takes between 4 to 6 months. Most of this time is the healing period, where the implant fuses with your jawbone. While it requires patience, the long-term result is well worth it.
You care for it just like a natural tooth! Regular brushing, flossing (using implant-specific floss if needed), and routine dental cleanings and check-ups at our office are all that’s required to keep your implant and surrounding tissue healthy for years to come.

Coverage varies widely by plan. While some insurance plans offer partial coverage for the crown or related procedures, the implant itself is often considered a premium service. Our friendly administrative team will help you understand your benefits and explore flexible financing options to make your new smile affordable.

It’s very rarely too late! Even with bone loss, we can often perform a bone graft to create a suitable foundation for an implant. The only way to know is to come in for a consultation with our 3D imaging technology.
